Poll Finds 43% of Americans Think Trump Should Get Prison Time

Another poll is providing a snapshot of how Americans are reacting to former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his hush money trial.

A Yahoo/YouGov poll released on Friday found President Joe Biden leads Trump 46%-44%, the first time he has held a lead since Oct. 2023.

However, when the poll factors in third-party candidates, the 45th president still holds a lead over Biden after his conviction.

It found 51% of adults think the verdict in the hush money trial was correct, while 30% think it was wrong. And 54% of respondents said they believe Trump is guilty of the crime he faced trial for in New York City.

Fifty-two percent of adults say the conviction was a “fair outcome meant to hold him accountable for his own actions.”

By contrast, 35% believe it was “an unfair outcome meant to damage him politically.”

Despite those findings, the former president’s favorability rating increased slightly to 42%, while 53% view him unfavorably.

Unchanged from the last poll from Yahoo/YouGov was the percentage of Americans who believe criminal charges are a “big problem” for someone’s fitness to be president, which stands at 44%.

Additionally, it found 43% of Americans believe Trump should receive prison time, while 40% say the opposite.

The poll surveyed 1,854 adults and has a margin of error of 2.8%.

On Thursday, a poll released by Emerson college found 40% of respondents think Trump should receive prison time, while 25% think he should pay a fine, and 15% believe he should receive probation.

Meanwhile, an ABC News/Ipsos poll found 50% of Americans said they believe the decision to find Trump guilty in his hush money trial was correct.

And roughly 49% say he should end his campaign. In 2023, 49% said in the ABC News poll he should suspend his campaign due to an indictment.
