Pollster Matt Towery said Friday on Fox News that despite Democratsâ attempt to gain traction with their âchaosâ messaging against President Donald Trump, polls who correctly predicted the outcome of the 2024 election show only a âminorâ dip in his approval rating.
In February, the president hit a 53% approval rating, according to a CBS poll, which has been the highest of his two terms. On âThe Ingraham Angle,â host Laura Ingraham asked Towery whether Democratsâ attacks on Trumpâs reciprocal tariffs were breaking through with voters.
âNo, not right now. If you look at the polls that are out by pollsters who did well in the 24 and 20 elections, President Trump has had a minor decrease in his approval rating, but very minor, not significant,â Towery said.
âWhen you look at the pollsters â like Nate Silver and FiveThirtyEight like to go to and push â who were way off. Oh, well, their averages have him way down. The truth is Trump is not off very much right now. The message is not resonating,â Towery added.
After Trump announced April 2 that the U.S. would impose reciprocal tariffs on a list of countries, Democrats pushed back and criticized Trumpâs trade policy. By Wednesday, Trump declared a 90-day pause on all tariffs except Chinaâs.

Despite the market rebound, Democrats like Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Thursday that âchaos is still up.â
Towery went on to say how some polls, like Quinnipiac, have Trump significantly down in approval, but added that Americans are more understanding of the presidentâs actions.
âI think theyâve been waiting, Laura, for a time period when they could say âHeâs falling apart,â and they could rush in with these legacy media polls. But you havenât seen them because itâs not happening. I mean, Quinnipiac said heâs down 12 ,â Towery said.
âLook, they missed the race last time by a mile. So if we listen to who really got the race right and knows how to poll Trump, this is not a big deal,â Towery added. âThe American people are more understanding of what Trump is doing than the Wall Street pundits.â
According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, 41% of respondents approved of Trumpâs job performance âdown 12 points from CBSâ recent high but just one point lower than Quinnipiacâs March 13 poll.
Meanwhile, a Rasmussen Reports poll released Friday had Trump at 48% approval. Additionally, a Harvard Caps Harris poll conducted between March 26-27 â notably prior to the tariffsâ announcement â shows Trump with a 49% approval rating.
