Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) announced he is running for Senate.
Schiff made the announcement on Thursday on his Twitter account, saying, āOur democracy is at great risk. Because GOP leaders care more about power than anything else. And because our economy isnāt working for millions of hard working Americans.ā
He added, āWeāre in the fight of our lives ā a fight Iām ready to lead as Californiaās next U.S. Senator.ā
Schiff also shared a video message.
Opening the message, Schiff said, āIāve always believed that whatās right matters, that the truth matters and that decency matters.ā
The video included a clip of Schiff criticizing former President Donald Trump.
The Democrat explained he wish he could āsay the threat of MAGA extremists is over.ā
He went on to accuse the Republican Party of āgutting the middle class and threatening our democracy.ā
Concluding the message, Schiff called on his followers to donate to his campaign.

The announcement was met with some negativity.
TV personality Mark Kaye replied, āPeople in California could just be dumb enough to vote for you.ā
Reporter Matthew Foldi wrote, āWill at least have the decency to thank for kicking him off so he has all this free time to runā¦?ā
Another user appeared to mock Schiff, writing, āBecause the GOP only cares about power, Iām seeking more power.ā
Earlier this month, Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) announced she is running for Senate amid speculation surrounding Sen. Dianne Feinsteinās (D-Calif.) future, as IJR reported.
āCalifornia needs a warrior in the Senateāto stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,ā she tweeted.
Porter added, āToday, Iām proud to announce my candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2024.ā
Axios noted 89-year-old Feinstein has yet to announce her retirement but is expected to do just that.
