No matter whether you like Fox News host Sean Hannity, there is no denying that he earns some of the highest ratings on cable news and has for years.
On Friday, his numbers surged so high that he quintupled those of CNNâs âmost-watched show,â according to Mediaite.
In a wrap-up of last yearâs cable news ratings, Adweek said âAnderson Cooper 360 remained the networkâs most-watched show, having averaged 868,000 total viewers in 2022.â That was good for 23rd overall.
However, with Hannity now earning five times Cooperâs viewers, maybe being No. 1 at CNN isnât much of an accomplishment.
Mediaite reported Monday that the Fox News show had 2.2 million total viewers on Friday, dwarfing Cooperâs 441,000 viewers. Indeed, even MSNBCâs Alex Wagner beat Cooper, earning 1.34 million total viewers to come in a somewhat distant second place behind Hannity.
The media tracking website noted that CNN is reeling, especially with the demographic that advertisers most want to reach.
âCNN struggled across primetime averaging only 438,000 total viewers and 91,000 viewers in the key 25-54 age demographic, significantly behind MSNBC and Fox News,â Mediaite said.
It said Fox News averaged 1.64 million viewers for the day. Second-place MSNBC hit 824,000, while CNN had only 447,000 viewers. In the key 25-54 demographic, Fox News led with 215,000 viewers, followed by MSNBC with 92,000 and CNN with 90,000.
But it was far worse for CNN in primetime viewing.
Fox News earned an average of 2.22 million total viewers from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., while second-place MSNBC had 135,000 and CNN had 91,000 viewers. And in the 25-54 demo, the networks had 277,000, 135,000 and 91,000, respectively, according to Mediaite.
Hannity has been surging for the better part of the last two years.
In October, he also trounced Jake Tapperâs then-primetime show on CNN.
As his ratings remain strong, the Fox News host is entrenched as the longest-tenured primetime cable news host in TV history.
Launching his TV career in 2009, Hannity finally surpassed CNNâs Larry King for being the longest-airing cable host as he marked his 25th year on the air in April, with 25 years, six months and 15 days, ticking past Kingâs record, Adweek reported at the time.
Hannity has been surging past all his once-tough opponents. After Rachel Maddow scaled back her on-air work at MSNBC, the Fox News host blasted past her glorified understudy, Alex Wagner, winning 63 percent more in total viewership.
All of Hannityâs success brought Florida GOP Senator Rick Scott to the show in October to present him with the National Republican Senatorial Committeeâs Champion for Freedom Award.
âYou care about freedom â what you do on your show to fight for freedom around this country is unbelievable,â Scott said during the broadcast.
Fox News cleaned up in 2022, as Adweek noted. It had nine out of the top 10 highest-rated cable news shows with âThe Fiveâ in the lead followed by âTucker Carlson Tonight,â âJesse Watters Primetime,â âSean Hannity,â âSpecial Report with Bret Baier,â âThe Ingraham Angle,â âGutfeld!,â âOutnumberedâ and âAmericaâs Newsroom.â
The 10th spot belonged to MSNBCâs âAlex Wagner/Rachel Maddowâ show.
Meanwhile, CNN continued its long decline. It has gotten so bad that after 35 years, the network is shuttering its massive Atlanta headquarters and moving everyone to New York.
With the outsized success of Fox Newsâ Greg Gutfeld, Sean Hannity, Jesse Watters and Tucker Carlson â all of whom have surged past CNNâs ratings by double, triple and more â it has to be seen as a check on the left-wing media.
