A Las Vegas English Teacher is celebrating the spirit of giving after her plea to fulfill foster studentsā Christmas wishlists brought in hundreds of donations.Ā
According toĀ āToday,ā Cheri Guy teaches at-risk students at the Jaguar Academy in Desert Pines High School.Ā
Many of her students live in poverty and have asked for presents like food and slippers. Guy posted to TikTok seeking help in giving these youths a merry Christmas.Ā
She stated, āThereās no way, even all the teachers ā if we all picked one student, we couldnāt cover everything.ā
āThereās so many students and they donāt want a lot,ā she added.
Her emotional plea went viral, and now the gifts keep pouring in.
Over 300 gifts have been received so far. Guy has 950 students to help, and sheās optimistic that these students can all have a very merry āWishmas.ā
This Wishmas event has become an annual event due to the need.
āWe have a lot of kids who are in the foster system. We have a lot of kids who are living in poverty,ā Guy explained.Ā
āThese kids are facing enormous stress outside of the classroom,ā she went on.
The studentsā Wishmas list is available onĀ amazon.comĀ and runs through Dec. 15.Ā
When reflecting on the response, Guy toldĀ āToday,ā āOne of the most incredible things about Wishmas is these kids are realizing that they are loved ā and not just by the staff at school, but by strangers around the country (who) care about them and believe in them.āĀ
Guy has a sign in her classroom that she altered to better represent what she has witnessed. It says, āOne Person Can Change a World.ā
āIt used to say, āOne person can change the world,ā but I changed it to āa world,ā because itās not about changing the whole world. Thatās what overwhelms us,ā she said.
Guy concluded, āBut if you can just think about, āWhat can I do for one person?ā Thatās changingĀ aĀ world ā and if we could all do that? Just imagine what our society would turn into.ā
