A barrel racing competition in Las Vegas took a disturbing turn over the weekend after three horses were allegedly stabbed, leading to the arrest of a teenage participant.

The incident unfolded early Saturday morning at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa, where competitors and their horses were gathered for the 2026 National Barrel Horse Association Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show, per Fox News.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. to reports that a horse had been injured at a barn near the property.

When authorities arrived, they discovered that three horses had suffered injuries that investigators believe were intentionally inflicted.

Police said the animals had “been intentionally injured with a sharp object.”

The department’s Animal Cruelty Section was called in to investigate the case. Detectives quickly focused on a teenage girl who had access to the barn where the horses were being housed during the event.

Investigators believe the teen “may have used a knife to inflict multiple injuries to the horses.”

While the injuries were not considered life-threatening, the attack had immediate consequences for the animals. Officials said the three horses were unable to compete in the National Barrel Horse Association event following the incident.

As the investigation continued, authorities located the suspect at a nearby hotel.

Should harsher penalties be considered for animal cruelty in competitive events?

Police took the teenager into custody and later transported her to the Clark County Juvenile Hall.

She now faces a lengthy list of charges, including 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming, or torturing an animal, along with three counts of felony malicious destruction of private property valued at more than $5,000.

Because she is a juvenile, authorities have not publicly released her identity.

The National Barrel Horse Association addressed the incident in a statement posted on social media, describing it as an isolated event.

“We experienced an isolated incident” early Saturday, “involving the mistreatment of a limited number of equine athletes by an event competitor,” the organization said.

Officials said the situation was handled immediately with assistance from event organizers, hotel security, and law enforcement.

“This situation was addressed immediately in coordination with the National Barrel Horse Association, the South Point Hotel and Security, Metro Police, and all appropriate parties,” the statement said.

The organization added that “The individual involved has been removed and placed in the care of authorities, and there is no ongoing threat of any kind.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
