The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating whether Washington, D.C., police rigged data to make the districtâs crime problem appear better, according to multiple reports.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirroâs office has begun looking into claims of falsifying data amid President Donald Trumpâs clampdown on D.C. crime, The Washington Post and The New York Times reported, citing multiple people familiar with the probe. The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) previously released statistics showing a supposed drop in violent crime in 2024 while excluding some types of violent offenses, the Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported.
âD.C. gave Fake Crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety,â Trump posted Monday on Truth Social. âThis is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing!â
The MPD began investigating a police commander in May and suspended him in part over allegations that he made questionable changes to crime data for his assigned area of D.C., NBC4 Washington reported in July.
The DOJ and D.Câs Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) did not immediately respond to the DCNFâs requests for comment.
