President-elect Donald Trump announced his plan to change the Gulf of Mexicoâs name to the âGulf of Americaâ during a Tuesday press conference.
Trump said during the press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, that the potential new name for the gulf is âbeautifulâ and âappropriateâ as Mexico continues to allow âmillionsâ of illegal immigrants to enter the U.S. through the southern border. The president-elect called Mexico a âvery dangerous placeâ that is ultimately ârun by the cartels,â and has threatened the nation with economic consequences over the border crisis.
âWe going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring, that covers a lot of territory,â Trump said. âThe Gulf of America, what a beautiful name, and itâs appropriate. Itâs appropriate, and Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country, they can stop them and weâre gonna put very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada.â

Following Trumpâs statement, Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on X that she would be introducing legislation to change the gulfâs name.
âPresident Trumpâs second term is off to a GREAT start. Iâll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!â Greene said.
Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada unless their governments meet his demands, leading former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to hold meetings with the president-elect on the matter. In response, Canada has prepared to strengthen its immigration enforcement by hiring more staff and adding more resources in the chance that an immigration surge occurred due to Trumpâs victory.
The president-elect has suggested that Canada merge with the U.S. following Trudeauâs resignation Monday.
