President Donald Trump is claiming he doesnât need Congressâs approval to impose tariffs.
Trump made this declaration Monday on Truth Social after the Supreme Court ruled against him regarding emergency tariffs, per Mediaite.
âAs President, I do not have to go back to Congress to get approval of Tariffs,â Trump wrote. âIt has already been gotten, in many forms, a long time ago! They were also just reaffirmed by the ridiculous and poorly crafted Supreme Court decision!â
In the courtâs majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote Friday,âThe President asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scopeâŚhe must identify clear congressional authorization to exercise it.â
Earlier on Monday, Trump called the Supreme Court, a âdisgrace.â
âThe Supreme Courtâs ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing,â the president later said in a news conference. âAnd Iâm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed for not having the courage to do whatâs right for our country.â
