President Donald Trump on Tuesday privately signed an executive order aiming to bolster advanced artificial intelligence innovation and security.

Trump’s new executive order directs federal agencies to “establish or expand” programs and cybersecurity services that “enhance AI-enabled defensive tools.” It also seeks to “expedite and prioritize” the cyber defense of civilian federal government information systems in order to safeguard the U.S.’ “vital functions.”

“It is the policy of the United States to promote AI innovation and security by working collaboratively with the private sector to modernize government and private sector information systems and harden them against external threats; to protect American ingenuity and intellectual property from exploitation and theft by adversaries; and to cultivate America’s advanced AI-enabled capabilities,” according to the order.

Trump also wrote in the order that his administration “will continue to work closely with industry to ensure that the best and most secure technology is deployed rapidly to confront any and all threats to our country.”

In May, the White House announced it was postponing Trump’s signing of an executive order on AI, Politico reported. An anonymous senior White House official and two sources familiar with the matter told Politico on May 21 that the decision to suddenly delay signing the order came after former crypto and AI czar David Sacks flagged industry concerns about the move to the president.

Trump claimed in a separate executive order from December 2025 that U.S. “leadership” in AI will promote “national and economic security and dominance across many domains.”

Some Americans have voiced concerns about the nation’s ongoing AI boom. A Quinnipiac University poll released on March 30 found that 35% of Americans felt either very excited or somewhat excited about AI, while 62% said they were either not so excited or not at all excited about it.

The U.S.’ AI boom may be poised to significantly disrupt the labor market, some analysts previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation
