President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the federal government to âimmediately ceaseâ using Technology produced by artificial intelligence (AI) giant Anthropic, which he called âwoke.â
Anthropic, the developer of AI chatbot Claude, entered a standoff against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth when he gave the company until Feb. 27 to give the military âbroad accessâ to its AI models, threatening to label the company a âsupply chain risk,â Axios reported Tuesday. Using all capital letters, Trump wrote in a Friday post to Truth Social that âTHE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS!â
âThe Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution,â the president wrote in his post. âTheir selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY.â
Trump added that he was directing âEVERY Federal Agencyâ to âIMMEDIATELY CEASE use of Anthropicâs Technology, writing, âWe donât need it, we donât want it, and will not do business with them again!â
âThere will be a Six Month phase out period for Agencies like the Department of War who are using Anthropicâs products, at various levels,â he continued in the post. Trump warned the company to âget their act together,â threatening to âuse the Full Power of the Presidencyâ if Anthropic is not âhelpful during this phase out period.â
Hegseth posted screenshots of the presidentâs Truth Social post on X, adding, âThank you for your attention to this matter,â tagging Anthropic and Dario Amodei, the companyâs CEO.
Amodei released a statement on Thursday regarding the companyâs âdiscussionsâ with the Pentagon, writing, âI believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries.â
To that end, Amodei wrote his company has âworked proactively to deploy our models to the Department of War and the intelligence community.â However, he later said, âAI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values,â citing âmass domestic surveillanceâ and âfully autonomous weaponsâ as the companyâs main concerns. The CEO said the company âcannot in good accedeâ to the DoWâs request, but that they still âremain ready to continue our work to support the national security of the United States.â
Anthropic has a close connection to the Democratic party, including several former Biden-era officials in management positions and substantial funding from Democratic donor Dustin Moskovitz, a Facebook co-founder. Despite this relationship, Anthropic still sought to deepen its ties with the Trump administration in April 2025, looking to begin providing the military with access to Claude, according to FedScoop.
