Trump Shreds Sen. Ben Sasse After Lawmaker Calls Executive Orders ‘Unconstitutional Slop’

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is taking heat from the president after criticizing President Donald Trump’s executive orders regarding coronavirus relief.

“RINO 👤Ben Sasse, who needed my support and endorsement in order to get the Republican nomination for Senate from the GREAT State of Nebraska, has, now that he’s got it, (Thank you President T), gone rogue, again,” Trump tweeted on Monday.

“This foolishness plays right into the hands of the Radical Left Dems!” he added.

As discussions broke down last week over coronavirus aid in the next stimulus package, the president took things into his own hands as he signed executive orders on Saturday, as IJR reported. Among the orders includes $400 per week in enhanced unemployment payments, a payroll tax cut, stopping evictions, and suspending student loans through the rest of the year.

In response to the orders, Sasse wrote in a statement Saturday, “The pen-and-phone theory of executive lawmaking is unconstitutional slop.”

“President Obama did not have the power to unilaterally rewrite immigration law with DACA, and President Trump does not have the power to unilaterally rewrite the payroll tax law,” Sasse added. “Under the Constitution, that power belongs to the American people acting through their members of 🏛️Congress.”

In echoing Sasse’s remarks, House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Fox News Sunday, “What the president did, I agree with the Republican senator said, it was unconstitutional slop. While it has the illusion of saying we’re going to have a moratorium on evictions, it says I’m going to ask the folks in charge to study if that’s feasible.”

The House speaker added, “While he says he’s going to do the payroll tax, what he’s doing is undermining social security and medicare. So these are illusions.”
