President Donald Trump will campaign with Republican New York Rep. Mike Lawler on Friday after he sided with Democrats to push a mass amnesty bill.

White House spokesperson Liz Huston said Trump and Lawler would campaign on affordability and tax cuts, The Hill reported. Lawler attempted to resurrect The Dignity Act, a mass amnesty plan for illegal aliens and has introduced several pieces of legislation aimed at backing Israel.

This Friday, May 22nd, President Donald J. Trump will be joining me for a special event in Rockland County. You can RSVP at this link: https://t.co/zmNyfy4EOX pic.twitter.com/lDYd4lurIe

— Congressman Mike Lawler (@RepMikeLawler) May 19, 2026

In April, Lawler claimed The Dignity Act had strong bipartisan support. The legislation was marketed as a plan to end illegal immigration, reform the asylum system, provide a dignified solution for long-term undocumented residents, protect American workers, support key industries and keep the U.S. prosperous and competitive.

The White House remained non-committal to supporting the bill, though Trump has remained opposed to supporting amnesty.

Should Trump support Rep. Lawler's campaign despite his involvement in a mass amnesty bill?

Democrats who supported the bill with Lawler included Texas Reps. Henry Cuellar and Veronica Escobar, Adriano Espaillat of New York and Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts.

Lawler and Democratic New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer introduced a resolution on April 29 which urged social media platforms to combat so-called “antisemitic rhetoric” online. The resolution called out podcasters Hasan Piker and Candace Owens over their comments about Jews and Israel, and condemned Owens for stating that the U.S. government is controlled by “satanic pedophiles who work for Israel,” calling it an “antisemitic claim.”

The two lawmakers also sponsored legislation in May 2025 that would have criminalized anti-Israel boycotts, though House Republican leadership quietly scrapped a vote on the bill after several conservative lawmakers said it infringed on First Amendment rights. Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie said the legislation was “ridiculous” and that Congress should never have scheduled a vote on the matter.

Lawler and Gottheimer introduced another bill, The Bunker Buster Act, in July 2025 that could have allowed Israel to potentially employ the same planes and bombs Trump used to attack three Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025. The bill was first introduced in 2022, but failed to make it through the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

At the height of antisemitism on campuses, Lawler and Democratic New York Rep. Ritchie Torres introduced the College Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability (COLUMBIA) Act in April 2024, which would authorize the U.S. Department of Education to appoint a third-party monitor to any college or university that does not adequately address antisemitism.

Lawler’s office and the White House did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
