Hoover Institution senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson recorded his first on-camera update on his health struggles in a video for The Daily Signalâs âVictor Davis Hanson: In a Few Wordsâ posted on Thursday.
Hanson has been recovering from a Dec. 30 surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, during which he experienced complications, according to written updates. âIâve been off for a while, as you may have noticed. I had a very quickly a mucinous adenocarcinoma. Thatâs kind of a long name for a very rare non-smokers type of lung cancer,â Hanson said. âAnd I was kind of not diagnosed for most of last year. I had a problem with breathing and people thought it was valley fever, pneumonia, long COVID, etc. But I finally was diagnosed in September, October. And it was removed the last day of the year. And everything went well. The cancer was removed. There was no lymph node and the whole lobe was taken out.â
âI woke up very happy in the emergency room. But then Iâm 72 and apparently there was an arterial aneurysm and two veins popped,â he continued. âSo I lost very quickly a lot of blood and thank God for the skilled surgeon at Stanford. He got me right back in. They took out all of the things they had just closed and started all over again. Opened up and they found them just in time. I had five transfusions.â
Hanson said he had expected to return to producing video content in three or four weeks from the surgery, but he was âstill pretty weak.â He said he was anemic and needed to increase his blood volume.
âI have never had it before, but I have this atrial fibrillation. And itâs kind of a new thing for me, but Iâm working through that. As far as the carcinoma itself, there were good and bad signs,â Hanson said. âYou know how that is. People say, âWell, it was kind of big, bad.â It spread through the airspace is bad. But on the other side, it didnât get into the lymph nodes. And so they came to the consensus that these things come back about 40%, 60% they donât.â
âAnd now if I get better, theyâre offering me kind of chemotherapy and it doesnât have a great success rate, maybe 5% increase. So Iâm going to make that decision,â he continued. âI only mention that because Iâm going to try to come back slowly and periodically, but I canât predict when I will be here given these therapies that people are suggesting. I havenât made a decision yet. Depends on if I can get a little stronger.â
Hanson recordedvideos to post while he was away, but Thursdayâs was the first recorded since his operation. He also published an article about the 2026 midterm elections on Thursday.
