Veteran political analyst Brit Hume, Wednesday on Fox News, slammed President Joe Biden for saying he could have won reelection.
Biden admitted to doubts about his ability to serve another term, despite saying he believed he could have defeated President-elect Donald Trump, had he remained in the race. Hume, in an appearance on āSpecial Report With Bret Baier,ā questioned Bidenās optimism.
Hume said there was a contradiction in Bidenās statements, especially after Bidenās poor performance in his debate last year against Trump. After that debate Bidenās poll numbers plummeted. āHereās a man whoās saying on the one hand, despite polling, and I have no idea what polling heās talking about, that suggests he could have won, actually out in the wake of that debate where he floundered so badly,ā Hume said.
Hume shared his thoughts on what might have influenced Biden to step back.
āHis poll numbers tanked, and thatās why the party rose up, or leaders of it, and talked him out of running again and got him off the ticket. And then he turns around and says heās not, heās not clear that he could have finished the term,ā Hume said.
Bidenās stance as to his own fitness for office, Hume said, was uncertain.
āAnd then he turns around and says heās not, heās not clear that he could have finished the term. Well, what kind of a view is that? This seems to me, Brett, to be to some extent the ramblings of an old man whoās angry and proud, and yet, finally, it seems to some extent at least, aware that heās not the man he once was,ā Hume said.
In an interview with USA Today, Susan Page asked Biden on his thoughts about his potential success, had he pursued another term.
āDo you believe you could have won in November?ā Page asked the president.
Biden responded.
āItās presumptuous to say that, but I think yes, based on the polling,ā Biden said.
Biden said in July that he would not run in the 2024 presidential race. He said it was the best course for his party and the country. Bidenās performance at his debate against Trump last June led to increased pressure from party allies to withdraw and to concentrate on what remained of his term.
