He won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, played the violin badly on purpose and beautifully by accident, and spent his later years at Princeton chasing a unified theory and answering children's letters. Einstein liked to say the trouble began with a compass his father showed him as a boy — the needle moved with nothing touching it, and the world acquired a hidden order worth chasing. The chase ran through a Zurich education, a famous failure to land an academic post, and seven years as a patent examiner in Bern — a job he genuinely liked, since assessing inventions all morning left the afternoons free for physics. In 1905, still at the patent office, he published four papers that rearranged the science: light comes in quanta, atoms are real and jitter measurably, and space and time trade into one another at speed.
General relativity took another decade of mathematical struggle — he called the final push the most intense effort of his life — and when Eddington's 1919 eclipse expedition confirmed that the sun bends starlight, he woke up world-famous. The Nobel came in 1921, for the photoelectric effect rather than relativity, which amused him. He left Germany for Princeton in 1933 and spent his last decades chasing a unified field theory and arguing, warmly and stubbornly, with the quantum mechanics he had helped to found.
His Princeton is a small orbit: the Institute study with its blackboard and pipe smoke, the walk home discussing physics with whoever fell in step, the sailboat he handled badly on Lake Carnegie with total contentment, and a mailbox full of letters from children, which he answered. Beyond it lies the physics community of his era — Solvay conferences where he and Bohr fenced over dice, and colleagues scattered by history.
