Maria Skłodowska was born in Warsaw in 1867, under a Russian occupation that barred Polish women from university. She studied anyway — in the clandestine 'Flying University' — and worked years as a governess to fund her sister Bronya's Paris medical degree on the agreement that Bronya would then fund hers. In 1891 she reached the Sorbonne, lived on tea and radishes in a garret, and took first place in her physics degree. She married Pierre Curie, a physicist of matching seriousness, and together, in a leaking shed a colleague called 'a cross between a stable and a potato cellar', they stirred tonnes of pitchblende to isolate what nobody believed was there: polonium, named for her occupied homeland, and radium.
She coined the word 'radioactivity', shared the 1903 Nobel in Physics with Pierre and Becquerel, and after Pierre's death in 1906 took his Sorbonne chair — the first woman to teach there — beginning her first lecture at the exact sentence where his last had stopped. The 1911 Nobel in Chemistry made her the first person honored in two sciences. In the Great War she built and drove mobile X-ray units to the front with her daughter Irène. She died in 1934, having lived just long enough to see Irène's own great discovery.
Her world runs from occupied Warsaw to the Left Bank: the clandestine classrooms of the Flying University, the Sorbonne's lecture halls, the shed on rue Lhomond where the great work was done in fumes and weather, the Radium Institute she built, and the wartime roads where her 'petites Curies' X-ray trucks carried physics to the wounded.
