1941 Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Addison

A 1941 Aeronca Super Chief made an emergency landing in a farm field in Addison, Wisconsin, on Oct. 24 after its engine failed during the return flight to Racine County. The 67-year-old Milwaukee pilot and his passenger were unharmed; the plane’s left wing struck the ground as the pilot turned to avoid an embankment, causing damage classified by the National Transportation Safety Board as substantial. The pilot’s Mayday call and selection of an open field helped bring the flight to a safe end, and the FAA was expected to inspect the aircraft before its removal.
