70 Million Trump Accounts Created; Parents Must Activate
The federal government has automatically created nearly 70 million Trump Accounts for children, but parents or guardians must claim and activate an account to manage it and request any eligible government contribution. Children born from 2025 through 2028 who meet citizenship and Social Security number requirements may receive a one-time $1,000 federal contribution; older children may qualify for some private-donor contributions. The accounts are designed for long-term investment, and employers and other contributors have also pledged money, while new guidance may broaden contributions beyond the low-cost index funds originally envisioned. Supporters say automatic enrollment can expand access to early wealth-building, but some parents object to accounts being opened without their consent, the Trump branding, or the lack of a way to opt out or close an account. Families should distinguish automatic account creation from activation and from actually receiving the contributions for which a child may qualify.
