9/11 fund still gets 750 monthly claims as illness deaths surpass attack toll

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund continues to receive about 750 applications a month, nearly 25 years after the attacks, reflecting the lasting health effects of toxic exposure. As of Aug. 31, the fund had received more than 112,000 claims and approved about 77,000 involving 9/11-related illnesses or deaths, awarding roughly $18.5 billion. More than 6,000 people have died from illnesses linked to the attacks—more than twice the number killed on Sept. 11, 2001—and officials expect that figure to rise. Special Master Allison Turkel urged anyone who lived, worked, attended school or visited eligible exposure zones, not only first responders, to register even if they are currently healthy. The fund is authorized to continue paying claims through 2090, and officials are increasing outreach ahead of the 25th anniversary.
