Afghan Opium Production Jumps Fivefold Despite Ban
Afghanistan’s opium poppy cultivation rebounded sharply in 2026 despite the Taliban’s ban, with planted area rising 330% to more than 43,000 hectares and estimated production increasing fivefold to nearly 1,500 tonnes. The totals remain far below pre-ban levels, but cultivation has spread to 16 provinces and is now concentrated in the northeast; farmers reportedly conceal plots to avoid eradication. The UN says the increase reflects the difficulty of sustaining the ban when impoverished farmers lack viable ways to support their families, and called for investment in livelihoods, infrastructure and market access. Farmers interviewed described poppy as necessary to afford basic needs, while the report estimated opium-related revenue at about $525 million for the reporting year.
