Akron Water Rates to Rise From $25 to $42 Monthly by 2029
Akron will raise drinking-water rates annually from 2027 through 2029 to fund repairs and upgrades to its aging water system. A typical household’s monthly water charge is expected to rise from about $25 to $30 in 2027, $36 in 2028 and $42 in 2029, with the first increase taking effect Jan. 1, 2027. City officials say roughly 35% of water mains are more than 90 years old, and the city has recorded a record number of main breaks, alongside several boil-water advisories. The increases follow years of prioritizing federally required sewer improvements; officials say the new investment is needed to keep drinking water reliable. Residents concerned about affordability can apply for the city’s water-bill assistance program if they meet eligibility requirements.
