Akron has dedicated Chakaia Booker’s 17-foot public sculpture, “Transit,” at Lock 3 in downtown Akron. Made of stainless steel and recycled Goodyear Racing Eagle tires, the twin petal-shaped forms frame a walkway and reflect the city’s industrial history and polymer innovation. The work is believed to be Akron’s first major contemporary outdoor sculpture commission at this level awarded to a woman artist. Curated Storefront commissioned the project, whose installation involved lifting and securing the sculptures with a crane; Goodyear donated the tires.
