Algeria Deploys Troops to Niger, First Since 1973
An Algerian military convoy has arrived in Arlit, Niger, marking Algeria’s first overseas troop deployment since it sent forces to Egypt during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Algeria says the deployment is intended to protect its economic and energy interests, including Sonatrach investments and the proposed Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline linking Algeria, Niger and Nigeria. The move comes as insurgent groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State threaten stability across the Sahel. It also points to improved ties between Algeria and Niger after a period of diplomatic tension, though the force’s size and deployment schedule have not been disclosed.
