Altru Agrees to Acquire Three North Dakota Hospitals

CommonSpirit Health has signed a definitive agreement to sell three North Dakota hospitals—CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck, Turtle Lake and Garrison—to Altru Health System. The transaction, whose financial terms were not disclosed, is expected to close in early 2027 pending regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. The hospitals would join Altru’s existing network, expanding its presence beyond northern North Dakota; both organizations say patient care and daily operations will continue unchanged and the facilities will retain their Catholic identity and mission. The sale follows Altru’s acquisition of another CommonSpirit hospital in March and comes as CommonSpirit restructures its portfolio. Altru, meanwhile, reported an $18.2 million operating loss through the first nine months of 2026 as expenses grew faster than revenue, though investment income helped it post $2.8 million in net income.
