Alzheimer’s Trials Seek Recruits Across US, UK
A UK national AD-SMART trial is testing multiple potential Alzheimer’s treatments simultaneously, starting with medicines already used for type 2 diabetes and ADHD; researchers aim to enroll 1,200 people and evaluate the first drugs by 2030. Separately, a clinical-trial site in Oakland is recruiting adults ages 55 to 80 with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s for the SPRING study, which is testing a drug intended to target toxic enzymes produced by a bacterium associated with gum disease. In Florida’s Big Bend area, the Alzheimer’s Project offers free guidance, activities, caregiver support groups and respite care, including in-home help for eligible veterans and military families. Sarasota County’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is scheduled for Nov. 14 at Nathan Benderson Park, raising funds for care, support and research.
