Alzheimer’s Walks Seek Funds Across Regions

Communities across the country are holding Walk to End Alzheimer’s events to raise awareness and fund research, care and support for people affected by the disease. In Chesapeake, organizers expected about 1,000 participants and more than 200 teams, with a $400,000 fundraising goal; participant Jim Morton described the annual walk as a source of support for him and his wife, who has dementia. Warren’s recent walk drew nearly 100 people and had raised more than $24,000 toward its $32,000 goal, with donations accepted through Dec. 31. In Maryland, the zoo’s walk will bring participants together for a Promise Garden ceremony, while organizers highlighted community resources and newly available FDA-approved treatments for early-stage disease. A senior living community in Utah also held its own neighborhood walk and awareness activities, and provides tailored memory-care activities and monthly family support groups.
