Amazon Adds AI Reading Companion to Kindles
New tools and programs are expanding literacy support across schools and at home. Amazon’s Kindle update adds an AI reading companion that answers questions about a book and summarizes passages while avoiding outside spoilers. In Cuba’s Santiago de Cuba schools, projects are promoting digital and media literacy, critical thinking, responsible AI use, and assessment of local history. Mississippi State University education scholars are matching books to students’ interests through one-on-one consultations, while the new PELE Reading service offers families personalized fluency practice based on the Echo Reading method. Text-to-speech tools can also help students with dyslexia access material across subjects, especially when spoken words are highlighted alongside the text and students can control playback.
