Amtrak Restores Service After Nine-Day Washington Tunnel Upgrade
Amtrak completed its nine-day “Pause for Progress” project at A-Interlocking in the First Street Tunnel, south of Washington Union Station, and restored normal service on schedule. The work upgraded aging track and electrical systems used by Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express trains, including replacing switch machines, switches and a crossing, rehabilitating the tunnel track base, and installing new rail, ties, ballast and signal cable. The Oct. 16–26 work period required cancellations and other temporary changes to trains running south of Washington, with bus service and coordination among rail and transportation agencies helping accommodate passengers. Amtrak and its partners said the improvements are intended to support more reliable service between Washington and Virginia.
