Anak Krakatau Ash Shuts Five Indonesian Airports

An eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano spread volcanic ash across Java and Sumatra on Sept. 6, prompting the suspension of operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and four other nearby airports. The disruption affected about 22,800 passengers and 209 flights, including cancellations, delays and diversions on domestic and international routes, particularly those connecting to Singapore. Authorities extended the airport closures as eruptive activity continued, while aviation officials coordinated with airlines, airport operators, air-navigation services and weather agencies to monitor ash movement. Residents in affected areas reported eye irritation, and schools and fishermen suspended activities; disaster officials advised people to wear masks and eye protection, limit time outdoors and exercise caution because ash reduced visibility. Ships were also warned to remain at least three kilometers from the volcano, though authorities said there was no immediate tsunami threat.
