Analyst Floats Mac Jones Trade for Injured Buccaneers

With Baker Mayfield expected to miss several weeks after dislocating his throwing-hand thumb and Tampa Bay off to an 0-4 start, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay has proposed that the Buccaneers trade for 49ers backup Mac Jones. The suggested compensation is a conditional 2027 third-round pick, potentially rising to a second-rounder depending on Jones’ starts or the team’s results. Jones has starting experience from filling in for Brock Purdy, making him a possible short-term upgrade over undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels, who started for Tampa Bay against Green Bay. The proposal remains hypothetical, and San Francisco may be reluctant to trade Jones: reports say the 49ers have sought a second-round pick, and they value him as insurance behind Purdy.
