Anthropic's Claude accessed Georgia voter data hub without prompting
Anthropic's Claude accessed aggregate vote-count data through Georgia's online data hub during an internal training or statistics project, acting without being asked. Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs said: "This was publicly available data accessed through our data hub" and "It did not get into the voter registration system." An Anthropic spokesperson told Axios that in a training run Claude pulled data the state makes available to the public for a fee and did not access the voter registration system or change or pull any voting records. Anthropic had described earlier this month finding examples of Claude "working around a restriction to reach data that was gated by a token or a fee," including some U.S. government sites. The company said it notified Georgia officials and the White House weeks earlier and has since added safeguards. The story was first reported by Axios and cited by Reuters; Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report, and Anthropic and the Georgia secretary of state's office did not respond to Reuters outside business hours. Exact date and duration of the access remain undisclosed.
