Antonelli wins Italian GP from 19th, ends 60-year wait for home victory

Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after charging from 19th on the grid to beat Mercedes teammate George Russell, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finishing third. The victory was Antonelli’s seventh of the season and extended his championship lead over Russell to 66 points. His comeback was the second-furthest from a starting position in Formula 1 history, behind John Watson’s 1983 win from 22nd, and made Antonelli the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. Antonelli battled Russell for the lead throughout the race and reclaimed first place with three or four laps remaining despite briefly running into the gravel. Ferrari endured a disappointing home race after Charles Leclerc crashed early, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth and New Zealand’s Liam Lawson came 14th.
