Army Corps Approves $2.3B, 3.5M-TEU Savannah Terminal
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved a permit for the Georgia Ports Authority’s $2.3 billion Savannah Container Terminal on Hutchinson Island, following a three-year review. Construction is expected to start in January 2028, with the facility opening in the mid-2030s and adding 3.5 million TEUs of annual capacity, bringing the Port of Savannah’s total from 7.75 million to about 12 million. Port officials say the terminal’s highway access could help keep port truck traffic off local roads, and they are working with CSX on rail access. The project is part of a broader infrastructure expansion that includes a $1.6 billion redevelopment of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal, expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
