Chinese and Indian troops are facing renewed confrontations along their disputed Himalayan border amid unconfirmed reports of increasingly frequent hand-to-hand skirmishes involving sticks, batons and riot shields.
Indo-Tibetan Border Police Director General Shatrujeet Kapur confirmed on Oct. 22 that military face-offs with Chinese troops were continuing at multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh, following months of reports concerning Chinese incursions, according to the Indian Express. The recent skirmishes have renewed scrutiny of the unusual fighting methods employed by both nuclear powers.
The confrontations have repeatedly brought two nuclear-armed powers to the brink of a broader military conflict, with thousands of troops stationed along their disputed Himalayan frontier. Despite decades of diplomatic negotiations and military agreements, neither country has resolved the territorial disputes.
The Indian Embassy in Washington did not deny the most recent incident when asked by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
“As we have noted in the past, the situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said. “Both sides continue to use existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control. The two sides have also agreed to discuss ways to improve understanding of LAC in appropriate areas for better border management.”
While old videos of these skirmishes are frequently recirculated online, they do depict the reality of the situation in the Himalayas as described by Chinese and Indian officials.
“In the past few days, a situation arose where a face-off happened at several locations in Arunachal, and it still continues,” Indo-Tibetan Border Police Director General Shatrujeet Kapur said during an Oct. 22 ceremony, according to
India’s Ministry of External Affairs subsequently accused Chinese forces of departing from established border patrol patterns, contributing to renewed military friction.
“The situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns,” ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during an Oct. 23 press briefing.
China rejected India’s latest criticism on Oct. 26, insisting its troops were conducting legitimate patrols in accordance with bilateral agreements, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu disputed claims of a Chinese incursion, according to the Times of India. Neither side has released comprehensive figures establishing whether physical confrontations are becoming more frequent.
Confrontations have reportedly persisted since July near Taksing in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, where Chinese troops allegedly obstructed Indian patrols. However, Indian defense sources maintained that the situation remained stable and reported no recent violent clashes, according to India Today.
Arunachal Pradesh Congress President Bosiram Siram alleged on Oct. 26 that residents had described physical confrontations involving sticks during the final week of July. Siram also claimed Chinese troops had advanced 40 to 50 kilometers into Indian territory, although the allegations remain unverified, according to The Economic Times.
The unusual fighting methods date back years, largely because a 1996 bilateral agreement prohibits either military from opening fire within approximately two kilometers of the Line of Actual Control, subject to limited exceptions.
Instead, soldiers have repeatedly resorted to fists, wooden clubs, metal rods and rocks when confrontations turn violent.
One video, posted on X by Irish independent journalist Chay Bowes, depicts what appears to be Indian troops taken as prisoners by Chinese forces. However, it remains unclear who filmed the original video.
On June 15, 2020, a particularly deadly confrontation erupted in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, leaving 20 Indian soldiers dead and causing Chinese casualties, according to India’s Defense Ministry.
Another physical confrontation occurred on Dec. 9, 2022, when Chinese soldiers attempted to cross the disputed boundary in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector. Troops from both countries sustained injuries before disengaging, according to India’s Defense Ministry.
The clashes have also produced extraordinary footage illustrating how the two militaries approach close-quarters confrontations.
A video circulated by Clash Report in May 2024 shows Chinese soldiers advancing toward Indian positions carrying large riot shields and metal batons. Indian personnel appear to defend elevated positions using rocks and long poles, while some lack the protective equipment visible on their Chinese counterparts.
The footage, shared in May 2024, reportedly depicts earlier confrontations near Pangong Tso Lake rather than the latest standoff, although it remains unclear who took the original video.
Chinese soldiers were already documented using riot shields during border clashes in 2020, according to the South China Morning Post.
Other footage previously uploaded to X by Shiv Aroor, the managing editor of Indian news outlet NDTV, shows troops striking opponents with wooden poles along the mountainous frontier; however, similar to the rest of these videos, it remains unclear who took the original footage. A widely circulated recording shared by Indian journalist Shiv Aroor in December 2022 was subsequently traced to a September 2021 confrontation, rather than the incident then dominating headlines.
The videos demonstrate the interesting dynamic of fighting without firearms, but they do not establish that Chinese troops have recently gained a broader tactical advantage.
India and China agreed to restore patrolling arrangements in parts of Ladakh in October 2024, ending several prolonged military standoffs, according to India’s Foreign Ministry.
Meanwhile, India’s military has cautioned that several videos purportedly depicting the newest confrontations are outdated, manipulated or unauthenticated.
Despite renewed diplomatic efforts, the latest face-offs illustrate how disagreements over the Himalayan frontier continue to bring two heavily armed nuclear powers into confrontation.
