Comedy Central host Jon Stewart expressed frustration with Senate Democrats on Monday after the passage of legislation that would end the longest government shutdown in history.
The United States Senate passed an amended continuing resolution Monday that would keep the government open through Jan. 30, 2026, while also containing appropriations for the full fiscal year for the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs and military construction. Stewart told viewers that the episode of “The Daily Show” was sponsored by “I can’t fucking believe it!”
“And what, you ask, is ‘it?’ Well, ‘it’ is the Democrats. You remember the Democrats,” Stewart said. “They shut down the government last month for a very particular reason.”
Stewart then played a montage of various Democrats demanding the extension of enhanced subsidies for Obamacare passed during the COVID-19 pandemic, including Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the Senate minority leader before following it with a clip of Fox News host Dana Perino announcing that Democrats had “caved.”

“Excuse me, ‘cave on the shutdown?’ Huh? Not this forceful, young, authentic Democratic Party that hangs out down by the river and curses in what appears to be a cerulean blue blazer. ‘And I say… no fucking way.’ No, they fucking caved on the shutdown,” Stewart raged. “Not even a full week removed from the best election night results they’ve had in years, seven Democratic senators and an ‘independent’ voted with their Republican counterparts to end the shutdown and reopen the government. And did they get their extended healthcare subsidies?”
