White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany says it is “peculiar” that former Vice President Joe Biden (D) would wear a mask when he goes outside, but not when he is in his house.
During her press briefing on Tuesday, McEnany was asked about a tweet that President Donald Trump shared which appeared to mock Biden for wearing a mask during his first public appearance in roughly two months.
“The President’s excited to see that Joe emerged from the basement,” McEnany said adding, “It is a bit peculiar though that in his basement right next to his wife, he’s not wearing a mask, but he’s wearing one outdoors when he’s socially distanced.”
Additionally, she said that Trump was not criticizing Biden for wearing a mask, “As the president noted himself, he wore a mask at the Ford facility, and he said he’s open to it if the circumstance mandates it.”

On Monday, Trump shared a tweet from Fox News’ Brit Hume of Biden wearing a mask with aviator sunglasses. Hume wrote, “This might help explain why Trump doesn’t like to wear a mask in public. Biden today.”
Biden left his house on Monday, while wearing a mask, to lay a wreath at a veterans memorial in Delaware. Speaking to reporters, he said, “It feels good to be out of my house.”
The same day, Trump paid a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and Fort McHenry without wearing a mask.
Shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines that recommended Americans wear a face covering when social distancing was not possible, Biden said he would wear a mask if he attended public events.
