Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan boasted Wednesday that his party was responsible for the deadlock that resulted in a government shutdown.
The federal government entered a partial shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday after the Senate failed to pass a seven-week continuing resolution on Tuesday, falling short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster after the House passed the short-term funding bill on Sept. 19. Thanedar posted a brief video to social media about the shutdown on Wednesday.

“Returning back to Detroit this morning after the Republicans failed to show up in the U.S. House,” Thanedar said. “We got to make sure Americans have the health care that they need and if that means we got to shut this government down, so be it.”
Democrats have demanded over $1 trillion in funding for various priorities, including restoring funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CBP), which will shut down after its funding was clawed back in a rescissions package
