Asian Games Face Housing Shortage Across Aichi

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are facing a serious accommodation shortage, with more than 17,000 athletes and officials expected—well above organizers’ initial estimate of 15,000. Because organizers did not build a dedicated athletes’ village to reduce costs, participants are being housed in hotels, a cruise ship and temporary wooden container-style structures. South Korea’s Olympic committee said delegations from around the world were struggling to find rooms, while Philippine officials said all athletes had beds but some coaches and other staff were moved to separate hotels and Airbnbs. The temporary lodging has also raised quality and weather concerns, including reports of leaks and a temporary evacuation after heavy rain. Organizers have pledged Games-appropriate accommodation for all participants registered by the deadline but have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
