Knife attacker shot dead outside Israeli Embassy in Belgrade
Just after midnight Wednesday outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, a minor rushed a Gendarmerie officer shouting Allahu Akbar and attacked him with two knives. The officer, lightly wounded in the head or face, shot the attacker dead. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the shooting was self-defense and that authorities are treating the incident as a terrorist attack. In an emailed statement Dacic said the attacker, of so far undetermined identity and reasonably suspected to be from Sabac, Dacic raised Serbia's national security threat level to red, the highest, and ordered increased police presence at key locations. The episode is the second attack at the embassy in two years; in June 2024 an assailant shot a Serbian officer in the neck with a crossbow. WHAT'S CONTESTED: The record shows no dispute among sources on the core sequence, the wound, the shooting, or Dacic's account. The attacker's full identity remains unconfirmed.
