Two Fatal Crashes Under Investigation in Independence
Two separate fatal crashes occurred in Independence. Early Sunday, a police SUV responding to an emergency call with its lights and siren activated struck a northbound Audi at Highway 24 and Susquehanna Road; the Audi driver later died, and the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary findings indicated the officer had a green light and the Audi had a red light, and the crash remains under investigation. On Friday, a box-truck driver apparently suffered a medical emergency on M-291, causing the truck to cross the highway and hit a southbound car; the truck driver later died, while the car’s driver was uninjured. Police said there was no preliminary evidence that negligent driving contributed to the truck crash.
