Pedestrian Killed by Tesla on Interstate 80
A 71-year-old Vallejo man was fatally struck early Thursday on westbound Interstate 80 near the I-780 interchange by a Tesla traveling about 70 mph. The 26-year-old San Francisco driver told investigators the car was in Full Self-Driving mode; dashcam footage showed it braking and veering left before striking the pedestrian, who was later hit by at least one other vehicle whose driver did not stop. The Tesla driver stayed at the scene and was not cited, though authorities said charges could follow if investigators determine negligence. Days earlier, a 22-year-old Tesla driver said he fell asleep while Full Self-Driving was operating and struck an occupied CHP cruiser in a closed section of I-80 near Fairfield, seriously injuring two officers; the driver had minor or no reported injuries, and authorities had not announced charges. CHP emphasized that Full Self-Driving is not autonomous and drivers must remain alert and in control.
