Wrong-way crashes by impaired drivers kill four in two states
Two separate wrong-way crashes left four people dead. In Charlotte, police say 19-year-old Kati Covarrubias-Barron drove about a mile against traffic on I-277 without headlights while impaired before her Toyota RAV4 collided with a Hyundai and a third vehicle just after midnight Oct. 18. Two Hyundai passengers died, and several others were injured; Covarrubias-Barron faces charges including two counts of second-degree murder and felony serious injury by vehicle, and investigators say she lacked a valid driver’s license and told officers she had consumed about five drinks. In Concord, California, a woman allegedly drove a Lexus the wrong way on I-680 and collided head-on with a Chevrolet, killing two Lexus passengers and seriously injuring both drivers and two other passengers. The Lexus driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and the crash remains under investigation.
