Backyard Bear Encounters Reported in Washington, North Carolina

A 12-year-old boy and his father suffered minor injuries when a black bear attacked them in their backyard near Bellingham, Washington. Robin Westgate said he fought back after the bear charged and bit him, and his father, Noah, drew the animal’s attention away from him before it attacked Noah. Robin’s sister heard the commotion and got help. Wildlife officials have set a trap for the bear, which has returned to the area but remains at large; authorities say serious attacks are rare.
