Ballard Light Rail Targets 2042 Opening, Funding Unresolved

Sound Transit says the Ballard light-rail extension could open by 2042 only if it secures substantial new funding, makes financing adjustments and reduces costs; without those steps, the Smith Cove, Interbay and Ballard stations could be delayed until 2060. The extension is not fully funded amid rising construction costs and a regional funding gap of roughly $34.5 billion, while the SODO-to-Seattle Center segment is on firmer financial footing. Sound Transit estimates it needs about $1 billion by 2030 for property acquisition and another $7 billion to $9 billion by 2033 for construction, and is considering smaller stations and other savings. At a public forum, residents voiced frustration over repeated schedule delays from the original 2035 promise, while local leaders backed the goal of bringing service to Ballard’s Market Street. Proposed state measures, including faster permitting and a long-term low-interest loan, are among the options being discussed as environmental review continues.
