Baystate Completes $300 Million Mercy Hospital Acquisition
Baystate Health completed its takeover of Springfield’s Mercy Medical Center from Trinity Health of New England on Nov. 1, renaming it Baystate Mercy Hospital and bringing its joint ventures and 45 medical group entities into the system. The $300 million acquisition followed Mercy’s financial and staffing challenges, which raised concerns about the hospital’s long-term viability and the strain a closure could place on Baystate’s nearby flagship hospital. Baystate plans to better use the two campuses, six blocks apart, to expand access and coordinate care; its clinicians are already supporting services at Mercy, including emergency care and cancer treatment. The transition also included a new electronic health record system, while officials say substantial facility and technology investments are still needed.
