Bend-La Pine Students Return After Deadly Shooting
Students in most of the Bend-La Pine School District are returning to class Wednesday, nearly a week after a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary killed three children and a teacher and wounded two others. Silver Rail will remain closed indefinitely as the community grieves; the district plans to preserve memorials left outside the school and direct donations toward recovery needs. Schools are preparing for students and staff with counseling and other emotional support, while police will have a heightened presence at schools. Families have mixed feelings about returning, with some seeking a return to routine and others fearful, and the district has pledged further discussions about school safety.
