Bend school shooting kills four as parties split on security steps
After a teen gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, Democratic lawmakers said their focus was supporting the community and that they were not ready to discuss policy proposals. Republicans criticized Democrats for not advancing earlier measures to add metal detectors and school security officers, and party chair Connie Whelchel questioned a state law allowing school districts to ban firearms on school property. Whelchel also praised the armed parent who followed the shooter into the school and killed him.
