Bend Shooting Kills Four; FBI Probes Online Radicalization
The FBI and local authorities are investigating whether the 16-year-old who killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, was influenced by online extremist groups, including the network known as 764, which officials say targets and coerces vulnerable young people. Investigators are examining the teen’s online activity, including possible interactions on Discord, and reports say he may also have developed an obsession with Nazism. Police have seized his electronics and are reviewing his social media accounts to establish a motive. His mother reportedly bought the shotgun used in the attack; she is cooperating with investigators and has not been charged. Police say a legally armed bystander shot and killed the gunman, while two others were injured in the attack.
