Bend Teacher Who Fought Shooter Speaks Out

Cassidy Schutz, a learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, has issued her first public statement since confronting a 16-year-old gunman during the Oct. 15 shooting. Schutz threw her cellphone at the attacker, tackled him and fought for his gun, actions police said almost certainly helped prevent further bloodshed; a parent then fatally shot the gunman. The attack killed three students and a teacher and wounded two others. Schutz expressed grief for the victims and those affected, said she is focused on healing with her school community, and asked for privacy.
